When you wear a cross are you bowing down and serving that cross? Are you treating it as you would treat God? If so, you are committing idolatry. God’s glory is His honor, splendor, and dignity, and He will not share it with anyone. Notice that after the commandment in verse 4 to abstain from making a graven image, that it is immediately followed in verse 5 by the words, “Thou shal not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them”. In Isaiah 42:8 God states, I am the LORD, that is My name I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images (NASB). 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. The first commandment, in its prohibition of serving gods other than the one true God of Scripture, addresses matters of worship. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. The context of these verses is having “no other gods” before the true God. 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. The phrase graven image comes from the King James Version and is first found in Exodus 20:4 in the second of the Ten Commandments.
